It is very important to know your essay types before you start working on that essay so that you can use the right format and style and cover all the important points.

Here are some common essay types.

  • Argumentative Essay: An argumentative essay usually sounds more of a combative type, but as a matter of fact, its tone has to be persuasive instead. In this type of essay, the writer is supposed to choose one side of a certain issue and then defend his choice by giving appropriate reasons along with citing sources etc. Argumentative essay is good for students who need to learn how to present authentic material to persuade his audience.
  • Expository Essay: This essay is written to help the readers in performing a task. For example, a person who is good at cooking may guide their readers with different tips and tricks required to cook a better meal or how can they make nutritious food etc.
  • Cause and Effect Essay: This essay types is similar to argumentative essays as they too, persuade the audience, with appropriate reasons, to agree with them. It basically presents how a certain action will end up. A writer may write how awareness programs on adverse effects of drugs can result in a drop in the number of people who consume it. He is supposed to strengthen his essay with statistics and proofs. Narrative Essays.
  • Narrative Essays: They are basically stories but non-fiction. The writer may right incidents of his life like when someone special went away from his life or about his best childhood memory etc. Topics like “The best day of your life” are narrative essay types in nature.
  • Compare and Contrast: Compare and contrast essays basically do what their name suggests. You are required to compare to people, themes, objects, opinions etc. They can be used at various places like in comparing products, literary analysis, two stories, two events etc. You have to write down their differences as well as similarities in the topic that you have been given and their relevance etc. For example, you can compare two love stories like Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and The Ghost by Danielle Steel.
